Currently, the main purpose for this section of Scripture Tools is to keep track of which magazine/periodical issues exist, and where they can be found (online, at the BYU library, etc.). This site does not include a comprehensive index of articles; only general information about the magazines and issues themselves.
Periodicals that appear in gray below are still in progress.
The current magazines published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are the Ensign, New Era, and Friend, which began publication in 1971, and Liahona, the Church’s international magazine. Ensign, New Era, and Friend are only available in English.
About the Liahona magazine
As members joined the Church internationally, various missions started published magazines for their areas (you can see a list of early mission magazines further down). In March 1967, the Church began consolidating these magazines into a unified “international magazine.” Having a unified magazine allowed Church leaders to efficiently communicate with members throughout the world.
Over time, the international magazine has been made available in more languages, including English. Early international magazines had various titles (for example, the English verison of the international magazine was called Tambuli starting in 1977), but by 2000, all of them had been renamed Liahona or an equivalent translation. In the Book of Mormon, the liahona was a special compass given to Lehi and his family that worked according to their faith and diligence.
This timeline shows an overview of Liahona languages over time.
